“For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.” Titus 2:11-14
When we think of denial, we tend to think of it as something bad, don’t we? Like we shouldn’t be in denial about something. We need to face the truth instead. But the truth – no pun intended – is that there is something we absolutely SHOULD deny. And that is UNGODLINESS.
A forever relationship with God, everlasting life, eternal life with God in heaven, a relationship with Him now on earth and forevermore, this is NOT for those who merely call themselves Christians, go to church, tote a Bible under their arms, tell others they believe in Jesus Christ as Lord, get baptized, celebrate Christmas, have Christian parents, who ran to the altar 20 years ago with tears running down their cheeks to say a prayer asking Jesus into their hearts, etc. God’s forgiveness for our sins and the promise of everlasting life is for those who repent from their sin lifestyle and believe Jesus Christ is LORD and died on the cross for their sins and was raised from the dead, TRULY COMMITTING THEIR LIVES TO JESUS CHRIST AS LORD. This involves a dedicated NEW LIFESTYLE, of LIVING FOR CHRIST, and of DENYING UNGODLINESS. In plain English, this involves choosing day by day in God’s strength to TURN AWAY FROM SIN, to DENY SELF, to DIE TO SELF, and to LIVE FOR CHRIST ACCORDING TO GOD’S WAYS AS HE TEACHES US IN THE BIBLE.
God calls His people to turn away from “worldly lusts” and “ungodliness” and to produce WORKS that honor and please Him. We CANNOT earn God’s forgiveness and everlasting life with good works, but DENYING UNGODLINESS and BEARING THE FRUIT OF GOOD WORKS should be the result of receiving His forgiveness and everlasting life through Christ.
When ungodly temptation comes, those who follow Jesus need to DENY it. To DENY our selfish self-centered self-righteous self-seeking all-about-self self-gratifying self-pleasing desires and to choose the Lord’s ways instead.
Running to the altar to commit one’s life to Christ, calling oneself a Christian, calling Jesus Lord, celebrating Christmas, carrying a Bible under one’s arm, etc., all of this is great, but the key to everlasting life, to a forever relationship with God almighty, is FAITH IN CHRIST AS LORD THAT BEARS THE FRUIT OF A HEART AND LIFE THAT HAVE BEEN REDIRECTED FROM UNGODLINESS TO GOD ALMIGHTY THROUGH CHRIST, amen!
When you face the temptations of ungodliness, DENY the ungodliness, say NO to the ungodliness, and say YES TO THE LORD JESUS CHRIST FOREVERMORE!
