“Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” 1 Thess. 5:16-18
“Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Phil. 4:11-13
One day a woman told me about her house. On the subway. She could not have been prouder, more delighted, more thankful, and more content as she shared with me which train she slept on. Her only dissatisfaction was that sometimes the police didn’t want her sleeping on more than one seat. After all, subway riders had the right to take a seat also. Do you see a message in this?
The Lord makes clear in His Word we are to be thankful, to be joyful in Him, to be content, and not to complain. I confess far too often I have found myself not thankful, not joyful, not content, and complaining. When I return my focus to the Lord and His Word, and open my heart and eyes to His endless blessings most importantly the blessing of having a forever relationship with Him through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ who died on the cross to pay my sin penalty and was raised from the dead, I remember this.
To be thankful. To be joyful in Him. To be content. And not to complain.
There was a homeless woman with so very little who expressed thanksgiving and contentment because from her perspective she had so very much.
A good reminder for us all, don’t you think?
To be thankful. And joyful in Jesus. Content. And not to complain.
