“And He looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts into the treasury, and He saw also a certain poor widow putting in two mites. So He said, “Truly I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all; for all these out of their abundance have put in offerings for God, but she out of her poverty put in all the livelihood that she had.”” Luke 21:1-4
Why do you suppose Jesus honored the widow who gave her tiny bit of money instead of the rich people who gave a little bit of their huge amount of money? Is the message in the Bible story above about money? The words of Jesus make it clear He honored and recognized her because she gave abundantly from her state of poverty while the rich people gave little out of their abundance. He even says she gave all her livelihood, or in the King James version all her “living” which has even greater implications. But in plain English, in simple terms, what exactly was Jesus saying? And what might this message contain in it for us?
Wasn’t Jesus in essence talking about the state of their hearts? God knows our every thought, and we are responsible for our thoughts. We can have thoughts that honor God, and thoughts that are sin in His eyes. What did God see in their hearts? The poor widow woman in giving her tiny bit of money which was all she had had a heart filled with LOVE, REVERENCE, HONOR, FAITH, TRUST, WORSHIP, SACRIFICE, DEPENDENCE ON GOD, SERVICE, THANKSGIVING, and OBEDIENCE, don’t you think? What about the rich people? Were there hearts not filled with GREED, LUST, SELFISHNESS, SELFISH AMBITION, SELF-CENTEREDNESS, DISTRUST, SELF-DISOBEDIENCE, PRIDE, and DISHONOR? Only the Lord knew the true state of their hearts, but more than likely the heart of the widow looked vastly different from the hearts of the rich people who gave so very little of what they had.
Is there a message in this for us? Is it possible the message may even extend far beyond the giving of money at church or to a ministry or to support a missionary or to help the poor or in some fashion into the work of God’s Kingdom?
When God looks inside your heart, and mine, and sees our actions, whether regarding the giving of the money with which He has entrusted us or with anything else, what does He see? Does He see LOVE, REVERENCE, HONOR, FAITH, TRUST, WORSHIP, SACRIFICE, DEPENDENCE ON GOD, SERVICE, THANKSGIVING, and OBEDIENCE? Or does He see GREED, LUST, SELFISHNESS, SELFISH AMBITION, SELF-CENTEREDNESS, DISTRUST, SELF-DISOBEDIENCE, PRIDE, and DISHONOR? The poor widow woman didn’t just give her tiny bit of money, did she? Truly she gave her heart. To the Lord. In a small and simple act that to others may have seemed meaningless. But to Jesus it meant everything. For her heart was His.
What about your heart? And mine? Are our hearts His? Are our lives His? Are our actions His? Is everything in our possession His? Are we holding anything back from Him at all? Or are we entirely the Lord’s?
Is the Lord speaking to your heart right now?
