“Show me Your ways, O Lord;
Teach me Your paths.
5 Lead me in Your truth and teach me,
For You are the God of my salvation;
On You I wait all the day.” Psalm 25:4-5…….
What am I doing here? Have you ever asked yourself this question? Have you found yourself in a geographic location, a relationship, a job, a sport, a hobby, a new endeavor, an interest, a dream, anything but a dream, on the streets, in prison, at a dinner party, in a grocery store, on the other side of town, lost somewhere, on the wrong side of town, on the right side of town but the side you never wanted to be, at a particular church, with a certain group of people, absolutely anywhere at all, and found yourself asking yourself this question. WHAT AM I DOING HERE? As though it’s the last place you thought you’d end up? The last place you wanted to end up? The last place anyone would have guessed you’d end up? The last place you think you should have ended up? Or deserved to end up? For the life of you, you just can’t imagine why you ended up there? For whatever reason? I have!
In fact, less than two weeks after moving into New York City for the next step of faith in going out on the road for the Lord and ministry, for my evangelism and streets ministry work and writing, publishing, and distribution of tracts and devotionals, I have had the thought many times, WHAT AM I DOING HERE? I have gone from awed, thrilled, ecstatic, humbled, and excited beyond measure and filled with passion and faith to be afforded the opportunity to love, worship, and serve the Lord in New York City to feeling fearful, worried, out of sorts, shocked, and wondering how in the heck did I land here and how in the heck am I going to get by and what the heck am I doing here anyway as I have taken my eyes off the Lord and His Word and placed them on my circumstances and surroundings until I have remembered to breathe and return my trust and faith and focus to the Lord!
Countless times in my life, I have had that feeling, what am I doing here? And, friend, I have found there are two reasons. And if you right now are wondering the same thing, wondering what you are doing where you are in your life, then perhaps you can relate to this. And perhaps you need some encouragement.
If we find ourselves somewhere in our lives we didn’t expect to find ourselves, it may be because:
1. The Lord sent us somewhere and WE ARE IN HIS WILL, and it can be shocking and overwhelming and scary to realize where He has sent us when we focus on our circumstances instead of on Him and His will and His Word.
2. We may be OUT OF GOD’S WILL and find ourselves somewhere the Lord never intended for us to be.
Need encouragement? If you are clear that you are somewhere where God has sent you to be but you are wondering why you are there, and how you got there, and feeling overwhelmed and exhausted and weary and wondering how you’ll make it and if you should stay and how things will work out and all the rest of it, TURN TO THE LORD AND HIS WORD, seek confirmation He has in fact sent you there, and STAY THERE IN THE STRENGTH OF THE LORD FOR THE GLORY OF THE LORD FOR AS LONG AS HE WANTS YOU THERE UNTIL HE LEADS YOU TO THE NEXT PLACE IF AND WHEN HE DOES.
If you are NOT IN THE WILL OF THE LORD and have gotten to some place in your life that is NOT where He wants you, then seek His forgiveness, return to Him, return to His Word, return to His will, and let His Spirit through His Word lead you to where He wants you to be.
ALL OF THIS, ALL of being in God’s will in life, begins with turning away from our sins and lifestyle of sin and placing our belief in Jesus Christ as Lord who died on the cross to pay our sin penalty and was raised from the dead, genuinely turning our lives over to God and His ways, being willing and committed to live for Christ, being willing to go where God sends us to do what God sends us to do to bring glory to His most precious most blessed forever name!
I am 100% clear the Lord sent me to New York City, and 100% sure He will by His Spirit lead me and provide for me and use me for His glory, yet at other times in my life I have been out of His will and landed somewhere I should not have been and had to turn to the Lord and go to where He wanted me to be.
Regardless of whether we are where He wants us, or not where He wants us, the bottom line is that when we find ourselves asking the question, WHAT AM I DOING HERE, WE NEED TO SEEK THE LORD, TO SEEK HIS STRENGTH, TO SEEK HIS WILL, TO DO HIS WILL, AND TO MAKE OUR NUMBER ONE PRIORITY TO LIVE AND BREATHE FOR HIM!
