“Then Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the people who were with him rose early and encamped beside the well of Harod, so that the camp of the Midianites was on the north side of them by the hill of Moreh in the valley.
And the Lord said to Gideon, “The people who are with you are too many for Me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel claim glory for itself against Me, saying, ‘My own hand has saved me.’ Now therefore, proclaim in the hearing of the people, saying, ‘Whoever is fearful and afraid, let him turn and depart at once from Mount Gilead.’ ” And twenty-two thousand of the people returned, and ten thousand remained.
But the Lord said to Gideon, “The people are still too many; bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. Then it will be, that of whom I say to you, ‘This one shall go with you,’ the same shall go with you; and of whomever I say to you, ‘This one shall not go with you,’ the same shall not go.” So he brought the people down to the water. And the Lord said to Gideon, “Everyone who laps from the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set apart by himself; likewise everyone who gets down on his knees to drink.” And the number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people got down on their knees to drink water. Then the Lord said to Gideon, “By the three hundred men who lapped I will save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, every man to his place.” So the people took provisions and their trumpets in their hands. And he sent away all the rest of Israel, every man to his tent, and retained those three hundred men…” Judges 7:1-8
Have you ever looked at a situation that seems so impossible you’re totally convinced you’ll never make it, or that you and others alongside you will never make it, and wondered why when you’re totally devoted to the Lord He would possibly allow you to be in such a situation without sending you the exact huge amount of help and support you are utterly convinced you need? Why oh why when you’ve totally cried out to God, and been faithful and obedient, and followed Him as your greatest priority would He now allow circumstances in your life whereby you just can’t see any way possible that you will make it, that you will succeed, that you will have victory, that you’ll be able to climb that mountain in front of you, or defeat the enemy, or make it to the other side, or achieve what He wants you to achieve, or get where you believe He’s sending you, etc.?
The Lord PURPOSELY did not want Gideon to fight his opponents with an enormous army BECAUSE GOD WANTED TO GET ALL THE GLORY INSTEAD OF AN ENORMOUS ARMY GETTING THE GLORY, and sometimes God does THE VERY SAME THING IN OUR LIVES whereby He allows a seemingly impossible situation in our lives without giving us “the enormous army” of help and support we think we need, whatever in our own eyes that may mean in the way of what and/or whom we think we need on our side to have victory, SO THAT GOD GETS ALL THE GLORY INSTEAD OF US GIVING CREDIT TO OURSELVES AND TO OTHERS AND TO OUR STUFF AND OUR CIRCUMSTANCES.
Gideon and the people WON BECAUSE OF GOD – NOT because of the size of their army! God did something that to us would probably seem totally crazy. HE MADE THE ARMY TONS SMALLER RATHER THAN KEEP IT THE SAME SIZE OR MAKE IT BIGGER ON PURPOSE. So GOD WOULD GET ALL THE CREDIT WHEN THE VICTORY WAS ACHIEVED.
I don’t know about you, but sometimes I face stuff in my life including in my ministry work and think to myself, THERE IS NO WAY I AM EVER GOING TO MAKE IT! How can I possibly succeed? Have victory? Overcome this obstacle? Make it up that mountain? Or over to the other side? Or achieve what God’s given me to do? Or go to where God is sending me? How could God possibly think to put me in such a position? I don’t have what I need to make it! I don’t have whom I need to make it! This is impossible! No way! But God wants us to LIVE BY FAITH IN HIM! Why does He do this with me sometimes? And with you sometimes? SO THAT WE DON’T GIVE CREDIT TO OURSELVES! SO WE DON’T TAKE THE GLORY THAT BELONGS TO HIM! SO THAT AT THE END OF THE DAY WE KNOW HE IS THE ONE WORTHY OF ALL THE PRAISE, OF ALL THE HONOR, OF ALL THE GLORY, FOREVERMORE!
We WILL MAKE IT if we are IN THE WILL OF THE LORD, if HE IS THE ONE LEADING THE WAY, if we are SURRENDERED TO HIM, if our FAITH IS IN HIM, if it’s HIS WILL – and may it be for HIS GLORY, AMEN!
