“Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord,
But those who deal truthfully are His delight.” Proverbs 12:22
One day a homeless man told me he lied to people sometimes because he didn’t like their responses sometimes when he turned down some of the food they offered him. I told him lying was sin, and his thinking was that it was still okay to lie because of the way people responded to him. Our conversation was light, warm, and friendly, but the topic was entirely serious. He was justifying the sin of lying by claiming he had a right because of people’s responses.
“Jesus didn’t lie because of the way people responded to Him,” I told the homeless man as I walked away.
I knew immediately by his response and tone the Holy Spirit had reached his heart with the truth about lying.
I bet just about everyone who lies has what they believe is a good excuse for doing it, but this doesn’t change the truth about lying. It’s sin against God, and we need to repent from it, seek and receive God’s forgiveness, and stop doing it.
That’s the truth about lying. If you’ve been lying, whether or not you’ve been caught in it, don’t wait to see if you’re going to be found out. You already have been. The Lord already knows. And it’s time to repent.
