The Decision to Trust

“Commit your way to the Lord,
Trust also in Him,
And He shall bring it to pass.” Psalm 37:5

“In You, O Lord, I put my trust; Let me never be ashamed; Deliver me in.” Psalm 31:1

“Whenever I am afraid,
I will trust in You.” Psalm 56:3

“Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid; ‘For YAH, the LORD, is my strength and song; He also has become my salvation.’ ” ” Psalm 12:2

“without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” Hebrews 11:6

“And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; For You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You.” Psalm 9:10

One of the most profound lessons I’ve ever learned about trust I heard once from a human but learned ultimately from God. From God’s Word, the Bible, and from God through my own life experience.

Trusting in God is not about what we think or feel. Trust in God is about a decision. A decision to trust God. Regardless of our thoughts. Regardless of our feelings. Regardless even of our circumstances. Regardless of what we see, hear, feel, taste, or touch. Regardless of our senses. Regardless of what we face. Regardless of our challenges, hardships, needs, hurts, hopes, regardless of our everyday lives. Regardless of the details of our lives.

Many years ago, when I professed to believe in Christ as Lord but had no deep personal committed relationship with Him, a woman the Lord had sent to love and comfort and encourage and pray for me told me that we should CHOOSE TO TRUST GOD. That TRUST IS A CHOICE. That she had heard if I recall correctly a well-known woman in ministry share this concept.

That we must CHOOSE TO TRUST HIM. I chewed on the idea for a bit, then lay it aside. A few times through the years perhaps, I remembered the words. I didn’t get it. Now I do.

For the Spirit of God stepped in to bring to light this concept of MAKING A DECISION TO TRUST GOD in two ways.

First, He showed me in His Word and continues to show me over and again how the psalmist CHOOSES TO TRUST GOD. He MAKES A DECISION TO TRUST GOD. He WILLS HIMSELF TO TRUST GOD. Not only does the psalmist do this, but throughout the Bible, those who had victory in their lives, who won life’s biggest battles, who loved and served the Lord in the most magnificent and powerful ways, who led lives filled with faith beyond imagination, who accomplished things seemingly unfathomable, they CHOSE TO TRUST GOD, they CHOSE TO BELIEVE IN GOD, no matter what they felt or thought or saw or experienced or faced.

Second, in my own life, the Lord has shown me time and again that if I wait around to trust Him until I feel like trusting Him and until my circumstances line up with my personal desires, and until what I see is pleasing to me, and until my thoughts are peaceful and life feels secure and such, I will not trust God.

I am a deeply sensitive, deeply passionate woman of God who has a lifelong history of many, many intense emotions. Waiting around for me to feel like trusting God is anything but wise. I need to CHOOSE TO TRUST GOD NO MATTER WHAT I FEEL OR THINK OR EXPERIENCE IN LIFE OR FACE. TRUSTING GOD FOR ME IS A CHOICE. IT’S A DECISION I HAVE TO MAKE. It’s a DECISION WE HAVE TO MAKE TO TRUST GOD.

And that DECISION TO TRUST GOD needs to be followed with action NO MATTER WHAT WE FEEL, THINK, EXPERIENCE, OR FACE. We have to consciously in God’s strength do what He desires us to do NO MATTER WHAT by BELIEVING IN HIM and LETTING HIS SPIRIT LEAD AND EMPOWER US for HIS GLORY.

Trust, friend, is NOT about how we feel, not about what we think, not about our circumstances, and not about what we face. TRUSTING GOD is NOT about us. It’s not about others. It’s not about life itself. It’s about CHRIST WHO IS FOREVER LORD.

And we need to CHOOSE TO TRUST GOD. We need to DECIDE TO TRUST GOD. And, in so doing, we need to live our lives, moment by moment, NOT based on what we feel or think or on our circumstances or on what we face. WE NEED TO LIVE OUR LIVES BASED ON CHRIST IN LOVING FAITHFUL DEVOTION AND OBEDIENCE TO THE LORD!
