“These six things doth the LORD hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.” Proverbs 6:16-19
In this sugar-coated, self-centered-saturated world, even those who profess to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ sometimes get swept away with a watered down version of the Gospel message – or even a totally false version of it.
How often I have visited churches or talked to professing believers only to find the resounding message is, “Jesus loves you! Jesus loves you!” And that’s the end of it. Like all we need to do is intellectually believe in Jesus who loves us and live happily ever after. Sin, Satan, death, hell, the lake of fire, repentance, heaven, and righteousness, sanctification and holiness, learning to live according to God’s ways rather than the world’s, loving, honoring, praising, adoring, worshiping God, and renewing the mind in God’s Word and being transformed by God’s Spirit, growing in God’s image and helping to build His Kingdom of Christ followers, denying self, taking up one’s cross, dying to self, and living for Christ, being a servant of Christ and a child of God, all of this, seems to get shoved off the table, swept under the rug, and replaced with a dangerously false and ultimately deadly message of, “God loves you! God loves you!” and that’s the end of it as though there’s nothing more to following Christ than this.
Those who will spend forever with God are those who repent and turn to Him and His ways through Christ. Does God love us? Yes! Does God love our sin? He abhors it! Does God save us through Christ so we can remain in sin? No! True faith in Christ manifests in lives devoted to Him. And those truly devoted to Christ study God’s Word continually and learn to live by it.
The verses above name just seven sins God despises. If we really love the Lord, will we not learn what displeases and dishonors Him and strive to learn how we can love, honor, and magnify His name instead? Pride, lying, murder, planning evil, doing evil, being a false witness, and creating division are despised by God.
How can we profess to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, to love the Lord, and to follow the Lord, to desire to spend forever with Him, to enjoy His fellowship now and for eternity, if we do not live our lives day by day with a commitment to live in such a way that we bring Him glory forevermore?
