Have You REALLY Committed Your Life to Christ?

“Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me.” Mt. 16:24 NKJV

“who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness…” 1 Peter 2:24 NKJV

“Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: “The Lord knows those who are His,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” 2 Tim. 2:19 NKJV

“For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.” 1 Peter 6:20 NKJV

“And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men,” Col. 3:20 NKJV

“‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me.” Mt. 15:8 NKJV

“Do you know the Lord?” “Have you given your life to Christ?” “Are you born again?” “Are you saved?” “Have you dedicated your life to Christ?” “Did you go up to the church altar at the end of the service when the pastor asked if anyone wants to commit his or her life to Christ?” Those of us who believe in the Lord Jesus Christ sometimes throw these questions around. We ask people with sincere hearts, wanting to know if someone has committed his or her life to the Lord Jesus Christ. But there can be a grave problem in this. We can too easily toss around the questions, and the answers, whether we’re the ones asking or answering. When it comes down to it, these are words. A commitment to Christ not only involves a verbal profession of faith in Christ, but it also involves a true belief in the heart that Jesus Christ is Lord, that He is the Son of God, died on the cross for our sins, was raised from the dead, and involves a lifestyle of living for Christ. It is a lifestyle, a way of life, that begins when we repent of our sins and turn our lives over to Christ as Lord.

A forever relationship with God, and eternity in heaven with Him, is not for those who know all the right catch phrases, whether asking the questions like those above or answering them affirmatively, nor for someone who merely says aloud that Jesus is Lord, or for those who call themselves Christians and try hard to do a good job at doing what they think Christians should do. It’s for those who turn from their sins and the ways of this world and lay down their own agendas and submit their lives to Jesus Christ as Lord of all. Real commitment to Christ manifests in a true faith in the heart He is Lord, a verbal confession of Him as Lord, and a lifestyle of devotion to the Lord and His ways and will for us.
