Peace Beyond Understanding

0

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” Phil. 4:6-7

“For unto us a Child is born,
Unto us a Son is given;
And the government will be upon His shoulder.
And His name will be called
Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” Isaiah 9:6

It may well be one of the most quoted verses in the Bible, and if there is anything people tend to focus on when they refer to it, it’s the fact we’re told we can have the peace of God which goes beyond understanding. Beyond our comprehension. Beyond belief. A peace unfathomable. Indescribable. Matchless. Amazing. Awesome. Who doesn’t want peace like that? So how do we get that peace?

Let’s look at the whole verse. Clearly we’re supposed to pray, God will give us everything we ask for, and THEN we can have that peace. Right? Absolutely not! That’s not what the verse says. God is not telling us He will give us everything we pray for. Nor is He telling us our peace is contingent on getting our prayers answered according to our own will.

So how can we have such an awesome peace if we’re told not to worry, to pray to God, but God’s not promising we can wave our magic wand and get everything we want? Here’s how.

THE PEACE IS IN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST! THE PEACE IS IN GOD ALMIGHTY! THE PEACE COMES FROM GOD! OUR FATHER IN HEAVEN! OUR SAVIOR AND LORD JESUS! OUR REDEEMER AND HEALER AND MASTER AND PROTECTOR AND PROVIDER AND FRIEND AND SO VERY MUCH MORE! THE ONE WHO DIED ON THE CROSS AND WAS RAISED FROM THE DEAD SO ALL WHO REPENT AND BELIEVE IN HIM AS LORD, GENUINELY TURNING THEIR HEARTS AND LIVES OVER TO GOD AND HIS WAYS, ARE FORGIVEN AND GIVEN EVERLASTING LIFE! LORD! KING! SAVIOR! FOREVER!

The peace God gives us that is beyond our comprehension is HIS PEACE. Jesus is the PRINCE OF PEACE! We find peace when we set our gaze and attention on Him and His Word. Not when we get everything we want. In fact, we may get nothing we want. But we can still have that peace. By abiding in Christ. Dwelling in Christ. Being sheltered by Christ. Taking refuge in Him. Meditating on Him. On His love and goodness. On everlasting fellowship with Him when we belong to Him. When we have repented and believe in Him. And follow Him. When we are His.

Know what? We may pray and get everything we want and still not have peace. Why? If our peace is contingent on the stuff we get from God, we are missing the greatest peace of all. THE PEACE OF CHRIST. THE PEACE WHO IS CHRIST. HIS PEACE. FOREVER!

Are you struggling? I am! I so often do! But God is teaching me that HIS PEACE is a promise to us we can have by shifting our gaze from our troubles to our GOD! To our KING! To our LORD! To our SAVIOR! To our FOREVER CHRIST JESUS! PEACE BEYOND UNDERSTANDING! JESUS IS THE PEACE! AMEN!
