“For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary and discouraged in your souls. You have not yet resisted to bloodshed, striving against sin. And you have forgotten the exhortation which speaks to you as to sons:
“My son, do not despise the chastening of the Lord,
Nor be discouraged when you are rebuked by Him;
For whom the Lord loves He chastens,
And scourges every son whom He receives.”
If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten? But if you are without chastening, of which all have become partakers, then you are illegitimate and not sons. Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us, and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live? For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best to them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of His holiness. Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless, afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” Romans 12:3-11
I was talking to a beloved friend one day when she told me I might think she was crazy but the Lord had been talking to her in a certain way.
“You might think I’m crazy, but the Lord’s been talking to me,” she shared with me. “When I start to do something wrong, He stops me and talks to me,” she essentially told me. She didn’t have to say anything more. I think I surprised her. She seemed to think it was unusual how the Lord had been speaking to her like that. But I had been having the same experience for quite some time.
“He does the exact same thing with me!” I essentially exclaimed. “That’s not strange at all!”
We talked for a little while about this what to some may seem like a novel experience, but to me had become part of my normal everyday life and what apparently had now become my friend’s.
What exactly had the Lord been doing in our lives? What had He been saying to us? What IS He saying to us? What IS He doing in our lives? In my life? And in my friend’s life? He is GROWING US IN HIS IMAGE. He is CONFORMING US TO HIMSELF. He is CHANGING US. He is REFINING US. He is TRANSFORMING US. He is CORRECTING US. He is CONVICTING US. He is CHASTENING US. He is LEADING US TO REPENTANCE. He is STOPPING US IN OUR TRACKS when we are falling into sin. He IS CHALLENGING US. He is teaching us to WALK WITH HIM. He is PURIFYING US. He is PURGING FROM OUR LIVES OUR OLD WAYS. He is TEACHING US TO WALK IN HIS WAYS. He is teaching us to LIVE BY THE BIBLE.
But why? BECAUSE HE LOVES US. BECAUSE WE ARE HIS CHILDREN. BECAUSE WE ARE HIS FOLLOWERS. BECAUSE HE IS PREPARING US FOR ETERNITY WITH HIM. BECAUSE WE ARE HIS SERVANTS. BECAUSE WE ARE HIS VESSELS. BECAUSE HE WANTS TO USE US TO BRING HIM GLORY AND TO HELP OTHERS TO FIND AND FOLLOW HIM. BECAUSE HE WANTS US IN INTIMATE FELLOWSHIP WITH HIMSELF – FOREVER!
The Lord is so utterly clear in His Word that we shouldn’t hate correction. We shouldn’t despite His chastening. We need it! We should be thankful for it!
The Lord makes abundantly clear in His Word that HE SPEAKS TO HIS CHILDREN, and His speaking to His children INCLUDES CORRECTION as HE DEVELOPS US IN HIS IMAGE.
Is God saying THIS to you? Is He by His Spirit who always and only speaks in line with His Word speaking to you in order to correct and transform you? You shouldn’t be surprised if He is. You are missing something crucially important if He is not. If you are a Christ follower, cry out to Him to speak to you to grow you. Dig deep daily into His Word which should be the foundation of all He speaks to your heart. If you are not yet a Christ follower, turn away from your lifestyle of sin, believe Jesus is Lord and died on the cross to pay your sin penalty and was raised from the dead and fully and wholly commit your life to God and His ways through faith in Jesus. And dive into His Word daily and begin to develop a forever relationship with God from whom you can expect to hear the correction He desires to give us all so we can continually grow more like Himself to bring glory to His holy most precious forever name, AMEN!
