How to Know What to Do

“Teach me to do Your will,
For You are my God;
Your Spirit is good.
Lead me in the land of uprightness.”” Psalm 143:10

“How will you know what to do if you don’t sit before me and listen?” the Spirit of God spoke to my heart.

I knew immediately He had given me a message. For me. And for those who would listen – no pun intended.

Christ’s followers follow Christ. Believers in Christ as Lord are to follow Him. But how can we follow Him if we don’t hear Him? How can we hear Him if we don’t listen? How can we listen if we don’t spend time with Him? How can we recognize the voice of the Spirit of Christ speaking to us if we are not familiar with His voice? How can we be sure it is God speaking to us if we don’t continually read the Bible to make sure everything we hear lines up with His Word because God never speaks against His own Word? We cannot!

To follow Jesus, we need to hear Him. And we need to spend time in God’s presence in dedicated alone time with Him regularly, daily even, and to take the time throughout the day and night each and every day to consciously stay connected to Him – with our spiritual ears ever open to hear His voice calling with wisdom and instruction, and, yes, correction, encouragement, comfort, and everything else God almighty through His Spirit according to His Word desires to speak to our hearts.

If we are facing a big decision, not knowing which way to go, or even a little decision, maybe even trying to discern the very next step we need to take this very day, there is only one way to hear God. We need to listen. And we need to commit ourselves to being in His presence daily. With His Word. Seeking Him. Loving, worshiping, and adoring Him. Listening, listening, listening.

The Lord speaks to His children. The ones who will hear are the ones who listen. Shall we not sit before Him to do so? Certainly we can hear the Lord speaking to our hearts throughout the day and night when we are not sitting before Him but simply going about our everyday lives with our ears open to His voice, but there is something so very special, and so very crucial, and such an indescribable blessing, about taking dedicated time to spend with the Lord Jesus Christ with whom His faithful followers will spend forevermore.

How to know what to do? Cry out to the Lord. And listen. Sit before Him, friend, and listen. The same is true for me. The same is true for you. The same is true for us all. Christ’s followers need to sit before God and listen and lovingly humbly reverently faithfully follow the Lord – now, and forever, AMEN!
