Grandma’s Recipe for Faith

“Paul, an apostle of Jesus Christ by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,

To Timothy, a beloved son:

Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night and day, greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy, when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also. Therefore I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands.” 2 Timothy 1:1-6

‘“Now this is the commandment, and these are the statutes and judgments which the Lord your God has commanded to teach you, that you may observe them in the land which you are crossing over to possess, that you may fear the Lord your God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments which I command you, you and your son and your grandson, all the days of your life, and that your days may be prolonged. Therefore hear, O Israel, and be careful to observe it, that it may be well with you, and that you may multiply greatly as the Lord God of your fathers has promised you—‘a land flowing with milk and honey.’

“Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.

“And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.” Deuteronomy 6:1-9

Some sweet beloved blessed loving and kind Grandmas leave behind legacies of love, hugs, cuddles, kisses, blessings, gifts, and yummy delicious recipes handed down for generations, but the greatest legacy of all any Grandma – and any human for that matter – can leave behind when his or her time on earth is over is a legacy of FAITH IN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST and a LIFE LIVED LOVINGLY AND DEVOTEDLY FOLLOWING HIM.

The apostle Paul speaking to Timothy in the first scriptures above didn’t just remark how Timothy’s faith had been passed down through the generations. Paul called the faith that had been in his Grandma and mom GENUINE FAITH. Why would he use the word genuine? Genuine signifies REAL. AUTHENTIC. Not fake. Why is this important?

Countless times I have heard people say they are Christian simply because they were raised in what they call Christian families. They celebrated Christmas. Went to church on Easter and Christmas. Or even weekly when growing up. They may have worn crosses around their necks. And had Bibles on their living room tables in their family homes. Perhaps a grandfather had been a preacher. Mom had prayed for the kids every night.

Paul isn’t referring to Timothy and his family going generations back practicing religious and/or family traditions not that there is anything wrong with any of the above! Paul is noting that Timothy and two previous generations had GENUINE FAITH. And this, friend, is most important of all!

Everlasting life is for those who repent and have GENUINE FAITH in Jesus Christ as Lord whereby we believe Jesus died for our sins and was raised from the dead and whereby our faith shows forth in lives devoted to Christ and living for Him according to God’s ways rather than the world’s ways. This isn’t about calling ourselves Christians and practicing various traditions. It’s about GENUINE FAITH IN THE LORD!

The second set of scriptures above shows us the responsibility in raising children of passing on GENUINE FAITH in the Lord.

May each and every one of us live every breath of our lives henceforth in full devotedness to Christ with GENUINE FAITH in Him as Lord with a desire and dedication to passing along to future generations whether to our own children and grandchildren and/or to others in general of all generations with whom we come into contact a legacy of GENUINE FAITH in Jesus Christ who is Lord forevermore, AMEN!
