“For they themselves declare concerning us what manner of entry we had to you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.” 1 Thess. 1:9-10
“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.” John 1:12-14
God’s wrath and God’s mercy have two things in common. First, they are both the Lord’s. Second, they are simply unfathomable. Unimaginable. Immeasurable. Beyond description. How so?
The Bible makes clear from start to finish God’s wrath at all of humanity for all of our sins for all of time is literally more than we can possibly imagine. Picture the greatest display of anger you have ever witnessed whether your own, someone else’s, in the news, in history, etc. That anger is NOTHING compared with God’s wrath He is storing up that He will one day unleash against sinners.
And the punishment that goes with His wrath is beyond anything we could ever imagine. His judgment and condemnation and the resulting curse of death, hell, and the lake of fire in everlasting torment apart from Him are beyond anything that any human words could ever possibly describe.
But just as unfathomable as God’s wrath at us for our sins is His unfathomably indescribably immeasurably beyond description awesome mercy. How so? And how do God’s wrath and God’s mercy fit together? How do they belong in the same story? Here’s how.
Every human is a sinner headed for hell and the lake of fire forever away from God almighty. But God loves us so much He sent His only Son Jesus to the earth to live a perfect life and then to the cross to die the most heinous death of all time as He took upon Himself all of God’s wrath at us and all our sins and sin penalty before God raised Him from the dead.
Why? So all who repent and believe in Christ as Lord, genuinely turning from a lifestyle of sin to God and His ways, truly committing ourselves to Jesus Christ as Savior and as Lord, really devoting our lives to Christ and the Bible, are forgiven and given a forever relationship with the Lord.
There is no greater wrath in the universe than the wrath God is storing up to unfurl on humanity for our sins – and there is no greater mercy than the mercy God offers through the Lord Jesus Christ those who repent and turn their lives over to Him now and forever!
My friend, the only way to everlasting life, to receive God’s love and mercy and forever with Him, to be forgiven and given eternity in heaven with Him, is through repentance and genuine faith in Jesus Christ as Lord. You will either face His wrath to come and live in forever torment, or you will turn your life over to Jesus once and for all and receive His unfathomable love, grace, and mercy.
God’s wrath, God’s mercy. Jesus Christ went to the cross and was raised from the dead to pave the way for sinners to be delivered from God’s wrath. In His love, by His grace, by His mercy, for His glory.
Choose life. Choose Christ. Repent and receive the greatest mercy that ever was, is, and will be. God’s mercy. The Lord Jesus Christ. God in the flesh. God who came in the form of Christ to this earth. Christ was raised from the dead.
Repent and believe in the Lord Jesus Christ. Turn your life over to God. Be His forevermore! Receive His mercy. Receive Him. Receive the Lord Jesus Christ. AMEN!
