“Then the master said to the servant, ‘Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.” Luke 14:23
“And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.” Mark 16:15
God commissions His followers to tell the world about Him, to spread the Gospel message of the Lord Jesus Christ, to help build His Kingdom of followers, to edify His followers, to help His followers grow in our relationships with Him, to testify of His greatness and goodness, to share His love far and wide, to pray for loved ones, strangers, and everyone in between, to reflect His love, light, hope, mercy and grace near and far, to distribute His awesome provision to those in need, and on and on all for the glory of God. And God can and will use anything He desires to connect people one to another for this purpose. Even granola bars.
Yes, you read that right. Even granola bars. One day I was going into the little breakfast room at my hotel to get a few granola bars. I don’t eat them often, but it’s a free breakfast and I keep my little hotel breakfast for people who might be in need of food. I met a man in the breakfast room and within minutes we were talking about the weather, and then, as is usually the case with me, the Lord Jesus Christ. Turns out He already believed in Jesus so he didn’t need to hear the Gospel message. But just as soon as I said goodbye to him, the Lord moved on my heart.
“I need to pray for you,” I told him. Immediately he complied. We stood in the hotel hallway, my hand on the side of his arm, praying as the Spirit of God led me.
We parted ways with the love of Christ strong in our hearts, and off we both went to our respective lives most likely to never meet again. God had used a few granola bars to introduce two strangers so one could pray for the other.
The Lord has taught me to keep my heart, ears, and eyes wide open at ALL times for opportunities HE gives me as HIS SPIRIT leads me to share the Gospel and help people find and forever faithfully follow Him. He keeps me constantly studying His Word, communing with Him, praying to and praising Him, most of all, in every way He desires, living for Him. He keeps me constantly ready for meeting people in person, by phone, mail, and Internet to whom I have the awesome privilege of ministering. Led by Him, for Him.
Is there a message in this for you? ALL Christ’s followers are commissioned to share Christ with the world, and we need to be diligent about building our own relationship with Him as well as in being ready to minister to others. But how do we get started? How does this happen? How will we meet people? What shall we do?
Yield ourselves utterly to God, to His Word, and to His will, to His timing, to His plan, and to His purpose, all for HIS GLORY. We need to realize that opportunities abound when we are totally open to the Spirit of God leading us. For God can and will use something as simple as grabbing a bunch of granola bars to something as big as a church group flying on a plane across the world on a missions trip to bring His followers to those in need of hearing about Him, being prayed for, ministered to, encouraged, helped with studying the Bible, etc.
I have learned not to take anything I’m doing for granted. ANYTHING can be used by God as an opportunity. I once had the privilege of ministering to a young homeless woman for several months all beginning with my need to throw out the dirty diaper trash day after day belonging to my paralyzed dogs on the street corner where I stayed in New York City. The trash can was right by where she sat time and again with a cardboard sign asking people for help. Time and again I had the privilege of talking to her about the Lord Jesus Christ. Countless times, I’ve been blessed to minister to people in Walmart and others stores. Parking lots, hotels, gas stations, veterinary offices, doctors offices, anywhere and everywhere. Many, many times I have met people while walking the ministry’s special needs dogs.
On the surface, it looks like all I’m doing is running an errand or going to an appointment or walking to my car or getting the wheelchair dogs outside for a ride. But when I yield myself to Jesus, and my heart, ears, and eyes are open to the Spirit of God, and I am willing to go forth as He leads me, the opportunities are endless.
If you are Christ’s follower, please keep your heart, ears, and eyes wide open to the Spirit of God leading you forth. Spend time with the Lord daily, diligently studying and living by His Word, assemble with the Body of Christ to learn of Him and worship Him and and love and serve one another, and as you go forth in your everyday life, be open and willing to share Christ with the world around you. For the glory of God almighty, go forth! Don’t think anything is too small or too insignificant to be used by God to give you an opportunity to glorify His name. God will use granola bars. He can use anything He desires!
