I Don’t Deserve God’s Love

“As it is written: “There is none righteous, no, not one;” Romans 3:10

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” Romans 3:23

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23

“Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” John 3:3-6

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

“that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9

“Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” Acts 2:38

“I don’t deserve God’s love,” a new friend essentially told me one day.

I had the sense she didn’t yet have a forever relationship with God through Christ – that she hadn’t repented and placed her trust in Christ as Lord who died on the cross to pay our sin penalty and was raised from the dead. That she hadn’t yet surrendered her life to God and His ways. She was too new in my life to even know, but one thing was for sure. She doubted she was worthy of God’s love. And you may be surprised at my response.

Then I continued. I wasn’t compelled by God to share with her the full Gospel message right on the spot at that exact point in time, and to the best of my recollection I had already given her my Gospel tract with the full Gospel message. But what I said is indescribably important for us all to understand. And the seed I planted is fundamental to understanding the Gospel message.

“That’s why Jesus died on the cross,” I said. “None of us deserves God’s love,” I repeated.

How so? We are ALL sinners. We are ALL separated from God because of our sin. We are ALL bound for everlasting torment in hell and the lake of fire apart from God because of our sins. We can NEVER earn God’s love and forgiveness. We can NEVER measure up to God’s holiness and perfection. We are hopelessly separated from God forever – with one exception.

Jesus Christ died on the cross and was raised from the dead to bear OUR SINS and OUR SIN PENALTY of death, hell, and the lake of fire upon Himself so all who repent and trust in Him as Lord, believing He died for us and was raised from the dead, truly turning our lives over to God, are forgiven and given a forever relationship with God with the promise of eternity in heaven.

My sweet new friend couldn’t fathom allowing herself to be loved by God, to receive His love, to experience and enjoy His love, to be transformed by His love, because she didn’t believe she deserved it. But none of us deserve it! We are given it BECAUSE OF JESUS CHRIST AND WHAT HE DID ON THE CROSS FOR US when we turn away from our sins and turn to Him as Lord and Savior of our lives.

If you’re trying to measure up to and to earn God’s love and forgiveness, or you’re holding God at a distance because you don’t believe you deserve it, I encourage you to stop, to repent, to believe Jesus died for you and was raised from the dead, to call on Jesus as Lord, to yield your heart and life to Him, and to RECEIVE AND EXPERIENCE AND ENJOY AND BE TRANSFORMED by His unfathomable forever indescribably wonderful and glorious awesome absolutely amazing LOVE! AMEN!
