Don’t Be Lured In

“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” James 14:6

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.” 2 Tim. 4:3-4

“But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction.” 2 Peter 2:1

“Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world.” 1 John 4:1

Know how loving parents warn their kids not to do certain stuff so they don’t get hurt? So they don’t get into trouble? So they don’t land in dangerous places and situations? To protect them? To keep them safe? Because the parents love their kids? The parents warn their kids so the kids don’t get lured in. Kids are vulnerable to being lured in. They go running after what they want, don’t they, without necessarily considering the consequences. Then they face the consequences – if they don’t heed the warning. Sometimes awful consequences.

Sound familiar? One day the Lord warned me. His Spirit spoke to my heart concerning a certain matter not to be lured in. He was warning me specifically about something concerning possible false teaching and false teachers. I needed the warning. I could have easily gone running after an opportunity I had been given. I needed to be careful. I needed His wisdom. I needed His direction. I needed His warning. Not to be lured in. To be careful. To watch where I walked. What I did. So that I wouldn’t be lured in.

My friend, God warns us over and again about false teaching and false teachers. This can be enormously subtle and deceptive. Extremely hard to discern. And incredibly tantalizing and seductive. Just like kids, we adults can want to go running after what we want. And the devil may use what we want to lure us into false teaching and false teachers. And the consequences can be beyond awful. They can be devastating. Because we can get lured away from the TRUTH of God’s Word. The Bible.

I hope you read the Bible daily. I hope you spend time with the Lord each and every day. How can we faithfully follow the Lord when we don’t know Him intimately, when we don’t spend time in His presence, when we don’t take the time to learn from Him and of Him, when we don’t learn to walk in His ways? I hope you see in the Bible God’s warnings. Including His warnings about false teaching.

Friend, false teaching abounds. It’s just about everywhere. Some of it is right in church buildings. Coming right out of church pulpits. Coming right from church preachers. Be careful where you go. Be careful what you hear. We SHOULD assemble with the Body of Christ. We should go to church, Bible study, small group, a house church, wherever the Lord leads us to love and worship Him and learn of Him and love and serve one another and help build His Kingdom. But we need to be careful about where we go. And we need to be careful what we hear. We need to go where THE LORD sends us. Where we hear HIS TRUTH. The Bible. Not perverted. Not altered. Not twisted around. The pure teaching of God’s pure Word.

How can we tell the difference between false teaching and the true teaching of God’s Word? God’s Word is TRUTH. It’s true. Always. Any teaching that does not line up with it is false. And false teaching can be unbelievably subtle.

Don’t be lured, friend. If it’s false teaching, walk away. Follow Jesus. Follow God’s Word. Follow TRUTH. Jesus is THE WAY, THE TRUTH – and THE LIFE. AMEN!
