“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” 1 John 2:15-17
““Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Mt. 6:19-21
“For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.” Mark 8:35
“Do not hold on to this place,” the Spirit of God told me.
Why would He tell me this? I knew immediately. Following the Lord Jesus Christ long enough to know. To understand. To comprehend. And to yield. To Him.
He had sent me to a place for ministry that I LOVED. Absolutely LOVED. It was a perfect fit. Though I hadn’t been there very long at all yet, He was already opening doors to opportunities. I sensed He would open many more. The lifestyle was a good fit for me. The hotel was a natural fit. The climate was better than where I had been. There were many things I LOVED about it. Most of all, I felt such an incredible peace inside. So the obvious thing to do would be to stay – and STAY – and STAY for as long as possible.
The Lord didn’t let me go far in my thoughts about my LOVE of the place and my desire to STAY long there before He reminded me of this. We are in dangerous waters when we hold on to a person, place, or thing more than we hold onto Him. When we grip tighter to something or someone we love more than we grip tighter to Him. When we cling and cleave more to someone or something than we cling and cleave to Him and to His Word. When we hold on to this life, and this world, and our dreams, and our comforts and securities more than we hold on to Him.
What must we do? Yield ourselves utterly to Jesus. Love Jesus more than anything or anyone. Be willing to forsake ALL – to let go of ALL – for God. To surrender completely to Him. To be thankful for all of God’s countless blessings but not to hold on for dear life to them. Instead, to hold on for dear life to Jesus.
To trust God’s plans for us are far better than any we have for ourselves. To trust that even when God’s will means we may be challenged, uncomfortable, have to take risks, leave behind comfort, have to forsake a dream, have to leave behind someone we love, etc., that the right thing to do is to follow Jesus – rather than to live for self and follow our own selfish wants, wishes, and ways.
I knew because Jesus is Lord and because I love Him more than anything and anyone that I would stay in that place only for as long as the Lord desired. I would be thankful for my time there, but I would need to release the place and any attachment to it to the Lord. So that I would be wholly available to Him in my heart and actions. Available to Him and His will and His timing – for His glory.
Our greatest attachment on this earth must not be to this life – but to Jesus Christ and eternity with Him. To God’s will and God’s ways. For God’s glory.
All dreams and desires we have we must place in the loving and merciful hands of the Lord – and trust Him to bring to pass what He desires and be willing to let go of what He does not.
We must live not for self, friend, but for Jesus. Such that we humbly submissively follow not the lusts of our flesh but fully and faithfully follow Him who is forever – THE LORD!
I release this place to you Lord. I release all I love on this earth to you. What you don’t want me to have, Father, help me to let go. Help me to surrender all to you, Lord. Help me to walk forward following you, Jesus, and not my own selfish desires. Help me to live for you and not for me. Help me to live to love and glorify you. Show me when I am holding on to something or someone I need to let go. May my greatest hold, Father, be the hold I have on you. Help me to hold on to you, my God, for dear life. You are my life, Jesus! The way! The Truth! You are forever! May I forever live to love and serve and worship and praise and honor and adore you! Give me the strength, God, to relinquish my hold on anything I need to let go in order to bring you praise, honor, and glory! May I not look to this world to satisfy me. May I look to you as my highest and greatest fulfillment. For you, Lord, are Lord of Lords and King of Kings, my God, my beloved, forevermore! AMEN!
