“But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power.” 2 Tim. 3:1-5 (underlining added)
““I know your works, your labor, your patience, and that you cannot bear those who are evil. And you have tested those who say they are apostles and are not, and have found them liars; and you have persevered and have patience, and have labored for My name’s sake and have not become weary. Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.” Rev. 2:2-5
““I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth. Because you say, ‘I am rich, have become wealthy, and have need of nothing’—and do not know that you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind, and naked— I counsel you to buy from Me gold refined in the fire, that you may be rich; and white garments, that you may be clothed, that the shame of your nakedness may not be revealed; and anoint your eyes with eye salve, that you may see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.” Rev. 3:15-19
Our first love in life should be the Lord Jesus Christ, and the fact God’s greatest commands are to love Him with all our hearts and others as ourselves makes it obvious. Also obvious in the first scripture above is that Jesus is warning people He is no longer their first love and that they need to repent. Do you need to repent? Are you on fire for Jesus? Totally sold out to him? Living and breathing to love and glorify God? Nothing more important in your life than the Lord? Is Jesus your first love? Your highest priority in life?
Or, are you fooling around with dangerous lovers? Committing adultery and prostituting yourself with more important priorities than Jesus? Excusing why you’re lukewarm or even dead when it comes to a relationship with Christ as LORD? Jesus warned He will vomit out those who are lukewarm. But His warning is one of LOVE. How so? The fact He issues the warning to all of us and calls us to repentance means He is giving you and I the opportunity to change our hearts and minds and actions and make Him number one in our lives. He doesn’t want to vomit us out! He wants us to surrender all to Him!
The Bible makes clear as the world draws to a close before Jesus returns and God’s ultimate plan for the universe begins to unfold that there are three kinds of dangerous lovers we cannot afford to be.
Lovers of self.
Lovers of pleasure.
Lovers of money.
Where, and whom, is your passion? What and whom is your highest priority? Who or what is your greatest love? If self, pleasure, and money are a higher priority in your thoughts, words, and actions than the Lord Jesus Christ, hear the warning of Jesus! And repent! Turn to Him and give Him your ALL.
May He be your first love – today and forever!
And should you find yourself again in your humanness falling back into engaging with dangerous lovers – of self, pleasure, and money, or anything else for that matter – may the Spirit of God bring conviction and lead you swiftly to repentance!
May the Lord Jesus Christ be loved and obeyed and glorified forevermore!
