“Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time, casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.” 1 Peter 5:6-7………..
“Cast your burden on the Lord, And He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.” Psalm 55:22………….
I was walking relatively fast laps in the hot August air around the big park near my NYC apartment when I realized I had a burden I needed to cast on the Lord. I remembered His promise that if I cast the burden on Him, He would sustain me. That’s when it dawned on me others might need to hear something critically important about casting our burdens on the Lord.
The scriptures above show us two things about what happens when we cast our burdens on the Lord. First, He loves and cares about us! Second, He will sustain us! Do you notice something missing? Does He promise He will make our lives perfect? Does He promise He’ll take all our trials away? Does He promise He’ll fix everything so our lives are just the way we want them? Does He promise the issues that have burdened us won’t exist anymore? Does He promise us life will be easy from here on out? No!
A google.com search turns up this as the first definition of the word “sustain”:
“Strengthen or support physically or mentally.”
What God does promise us is that He loves and cares for us, and that He will provide us with the strength we need to go through what He leads us through. And the fact He tells us to cast our burdens on Him implies we can give them to Him instead of holding onto the weight of them ourselves. The word “cares” comes from a Greek word which per Strong’s concordance includes in its meaning “care, worry, anxiety.”
I don’t know about you, but I feel a whole lot better and lighter and relieved and more at peace when I cast my burdens, weights, cares, worries, and anxieties onto the Lord and receive in their place His love, care, and strength to walk on.
Time to do some casting? Notice the first scripture above tells us to cast ALL our cares on Him! Should we not do what He says? Yes!
