“This is the day the Lord has made;
We will rejoice and be glad in it.” Romans 118:24
“The heavens declare the glory of God;
And the firmament shows His handiwork.” Psalm 19:1
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10
“And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness to God.” Romans 6:13
I was spending a few minutes of quiet time with the Lord one morning when He surprised me by impressing what follows upon my heart. Such a beautiful blessing it was.
1. He had given me a new day that was like a fresh canvas
2. That He is the painter not me
3. That He will guide my hand
4. That He will paint through me
5. That I am the brush He would use to paint His design
6. That I didn’t need to know what the canvas would be like by the end of the day but simply that the canvas is His
7. That the brush (me) is also His
8. That He supplies the paint
9. That it will turn out beautiful so long as I allowed Him to hold the brush
10. That brushes don’t move themselves but that I had been doing that
11. That I should submit to Him
12. That I should let Him choose the colors
13. That I should let Him create through me
14. That I should let Him hold me
15. That I should let Him time it just right
16. That He is the artist & I should let Him be
17. That He is God!
He began all this by speaking to my heart that I should live that day to bring Him glory. Just like I should live every day. Just like we should all live every day of our lives. For Christ. For God. Who created the universe. Who is the perfect artist.
Why did the Lord place this little message on my heart, and why am I sharing it with you now? I have lived most of my life believing I am the artist or at least thinking I should be. Even as a Christ follower, I have struggled with yielding myself totally to God. I have set off many mornings submitting myself to God but quickly thereafter taking the brush back, choosing my own colors, then splattering them all over the blank canvas of that day, making a childish mess all the while getting paint all over myself not to mention lots of people and dogs around me.
For though I have believed in Him as Lord, and called Him Lord, I have tried to be a little lord over my own life. And I have taken canvas after canvas, new day after new day, and tried to play artist. Rather than surrendering all of myself and all of my day to the Lord. Am I alone in this? Can you relate in any way? Do you sometimes if not often find yourself picking up your new canvas in the morning, grabbing a brush and a bunch of colors of paint, and rushing through your day splattering paint every which way all the while calling Jesus Lord – or not calling Him Lord at all?
Jesus Christ is Lord forever, friend, and the greatest artist of our lives and of this universe that ever was and ever will be is the Lord God almighty. It is only when we lovingly reverently faithfully devotedly humbly place ourselves, our hearts and lives, our canvases, our paints, our plans, our days, our everything in the hands of the Lord, choosing to seek Him and to obey Him, that we act as the vessels, as the instruments, as the paint brushes, as the clay, as whatever you want to call it, we are meant to be. Entirely Christ’s. Belonging utterly to Him. Wholly His. Not having been created to design and live out our own plans and agendas and lives. But instead surrendering ourselves entirely to God almighty.
Paint brushes are held by the artist and used by the artist according to the artist’s vision and plan and for the artist’s purpose. For the creator. Would it not be most wise of us to lay the canvas of each day the Lord gives us in the hands of the Lord, and be the brush fully submitted to Him, and let Him by His Spirit in accordance with His Word paint the days of our lives fully trusting Him to bring to pass in His time frame the artistry He desires to not serve ourselves but to bring God the glory He is due? Yes!
Let us submit ourselves utterly to Jesus. Let us be entirely His. Let us live wholly for Him. God is the best artist ever. Creator of the universe. Creator of our lives. Creator, Lord, God, King, and Savior, forever. May we submit ourselves day by day, breath by breath, wholly to God!
