“And the Philistine drew near and presented himself forty days, morning and evening.” 1 Samuel 17:16…………………………………………………..
Why did Goliath present himself to the Israelites for forty days, and what does this have to do with you and me? If you read the full account of the well-known story of David and Goliath in 1 Samuel 17, as I encourage you to do, you will see the incredible detail given to WHAT GOLIATH LOOKED LIKE and to WHAT GOLIATH SAID. He essentially looked like a gargantuan monster, and his words were unbelievably scary and intimidating. Why would Goliath show up for forty days straight? Because he was the ENEMY of the Israelites and wanted to SCARE and INTIMIDATE them and have victory over them so they would lose and experience defeat. If he scared and intimidated them, isn’t it true they might run the other way, be too afraid to fight, become paralyzed with fear, become discouraged and give up, surrender without a fight, give up before they even went to battle, not listen to God but listen to him who was their enemy? The Israelites were terribly afraid, but David put his trust in God and had victory over Goliath.
How does this apply to you and me? Sometimes our arch enemy, the devil, will “present himself” to us day and night for a length of time, to try to scare and intimidate us, to try to get us to run the other way, be too afraid to fight, become paralyzed with fear, become discouraged and give up, surrender without a fight, give up before we even start out doing something God has given us to do, not trust and listen to God but instead to listen to him who is our enemy.
Have you ever experienced this? I have! I have had times when the Lord gave me something to do, usually big and significant, and the enemy has been relentless, coming at me day after day trying to get me to either not start out doing what God gave me to do or to quit right in the middle rather than pressing forward and bringing whatever God called me to do to completion. The enemy wanted me to LOOK at his appearance and to HEAR his words and to be defeated.
No matter how often, and how much, the enemy comes at us to try to get our focus on his APPEARANCE and WORDS to us, we need to do what David did. We need to PUT OUR TRUST in GOD, to LISTEN TO GOD, and to ACHIEVE VICTORY in GOD for THE LORD’s SAKE AND GLORY.
If the enemy is coming at you really hard right now, STOP looking at him. STOP listening to him. LOOK TO THE LORD, SEEK THE LORD, DIG INTO GOD’S WORD, BE FILLED WITH HIS SPIRIT, and HEAR AND OBEY GOD, and GIVE GOD THE GLORY as you ACHIEVE VICTORY in CHRIST!
